I thought about various components of Human and Physical geography. I could do cultural, political, economic, human-environment. Rankings – Top Graduate Geography Programs for Spatial Careers. Hard to believe it’s already been 3 years since 2. I published my first set of geography graduate program rankings, based on NRC data. I followed in 2. 01. Last year I produced rankings of traditional GIS programs and on- line GIS programs. These four posts have generated approximately 1. I seem to have filled a void. This year I’ve decided to cobble together a variety of lists and categories with some new twists. Here are my notes for the 2. Over the past year I’ve come to the conclusion that, when in doubt, you’re likely better off attending a graduate school at a large major University, especially one that serves as a flagship public institution for the State. The reasons for this are varied but I think it’s a combination of (1) availability of top minds/resources/courses from related fields on one campus, (2) career- enhancing name recognition and (3) a superior University experience in terms of affiliation and alumni networking. Two and three sort of go together. You may notice a few tweaks in department tiers/rankings reflecting this idea. I’ve produced several categories of rankings this year. Following on my 2. GIS rankings and in response to some calls for separate Human/Qualitative rankings I’ve created a “Best Overall” category and several sub- categories. Hopefully this will be helpful for students seeking information for a particular field of study or area of emphasis. Programs listed under the “Best Overall” category provide a balance in terms of Human/Physical/Technical geography offerings and should accommodate most anyone aspiring to a spatial career. If you have a strong interest in one of the sub- field categories you should also consider the programs listed in each category. For potential Ph. D students the choice of a faculty advisor is the MOST important decision. Program/University is still crucial, but secondary. The overwhelming majority of programs listed here offer a Ph. D. I favor Ph. D- granting departments because they attract the best faculty and because you never know what twists and turns might come along. It’s nice to have the option to stay in place if the scope of your studies expand. You may notice none of the programs listed have a numerical rank order. I did this for two reasons. First, it’s sort of splitting hairs. How much better is #6 versus #7? I’m a quant guy but I don’t really know. I think these tiers make more sense – programs within each tier are ordered alphabetically. Second, I want to avoid misinterpretation by a bright student who thinks they must go to the #1 program…even if the #4 program would be a far better fit. And, this makes a good segue to my standard disclaimers and warnings about selecting a graduate program: From 2. I do NOT recommend selecting a graduate program based solely on these rankings. You can use this as a starting point but be sure to explore as many programs as possible, seeking to find the best individual fit. From 2. 01. 2/2. 01. Warning to prospective graduate students, selecting a graduate program is an individual decision and the top programs listed here may not be the best program for you. There are many factors to take into consideration and this decision process is probably worthy of its own blog post, or a series of several blog posts. At the very least, you should take a look at a recent copy of the AAG’s Guide to Geography Programs. So here we go – the 2. Ta- da! Best Overall Programs. Tier 1. Tier 2. Tier 3. Tier 4—Human Geography. Berkeley. UCLASyracuse. Washington. Physical Geography. Boston. Maryland. Oregon State. GIScience/Computation. University of Texas at Dallas. San Diego State. George Mason. There are, of course, a couple ways to get to the same place with Windows, and that’s no different in Windows 8. First, from the Modern Start screen type: msconfig and hit Enter. Or from the desktop, just like Windows 7, right- click the Taskbar and select Task Manager. Either way you do it, the new Task Manger will open on the desktop. Click the Startup tab to see the items set to run when you boot your system. Right- click on any of the programs to and click Disable. The program will still appear on the list, but the Status will change to Disabled. Right- click an app again and select Enable to have it run during startup. Notice that when you right- click a program in under the Startup tab, you’ll see more options. This allows you to get a better understanding of what each program is or does before you disable it. I find the option to search for the program online to be particularly beneficial. We’re all guilty of installing desktop programs or apps, using them once, and after a year you have no clue what they are. Betsy Newell, or "Mrs. Betsy" to generations of young students, retired this summer after 2. Director of Le Château des Enfants (CDE), the TASIS summer program for students aged 4- 1. She also celebrated her 7. TASIS family, dating back to Mrs. Fleming's first summer program in Pennsylvania, Frog Hollow. Longtime co- director Meagan Vincent will take the reins from summer 2. Meagan made the following heartfelt toast at Betsy's birthday party this summer. Her words echo the thoughts of everyone who had the pleasure of working with Betsy. We wish her all the best and hope she comes to visit during her summers off! I have had the pleasure of growing up with Betsy. So many of the qualities I have tried to develop are because I know Betsy. She has helped me set goals for myself and become a better teacher, leader, and person. Her influence on me has been immeasurable. Most importantly, she has shown me what it means to be a great woman. This sad day has been imminent. Betsy has been at the helm of CDE for longer than I have been alive, chasing children around and dealing with her staff and the parents and everything else that comes under the umbrella of Director. She deserves a rest. And since I knew this day would come, I’ve been paying attention. And I’ve learned some things about how to emulate this great woman, or how to attempt to be The Next Betsy. To entertain well, you must always have a selection of decorative plates, fancy cocktail napkins, and chilled bubbles on hand. When guests are invited, plan ahead. Have a seating chart ready, be certain that there are equal numbers of men and women and, if not, that the men are spread around and that they aren’t stuck with the same ladies for too long. And if you feel inclined, don’t be afraid to head off to bed, leaving the most responsible guest in charge of loading the dishwasher. To be a thoughtful guest, never come empty- handed. Bring a bottle of something. Have some paté or fresh lox on hand for a random occasion and never underestimate the power of a thoughtful re- gift. In the end, it really is the sentiment that counts. To be an exceptional educator, you must love children, all children, equally. Children from around the world are intriguing and engaging people who can contribute to the world around them, and certainly to a conversation at the dinner table. She has taught me to keep my expectations high, and that children will meet the expectations set for them. To be an outstanding mentor, teach by example. Leave room for mistakes and discuss the positive and negative sides of the issues that come up every day, explaining the variety of ways to handle various problems or situations. Be supportive, be honest, be constructive. To be an unparalleled director, think ten steps ahead. When forced to make snap decisions, immediately consider every option and possibility and make the most sensible choice, which may not be obvious to the rest of us. Lead with authority and grace. Be involved with everything. Command respect. Most importantly, keep track of every penny and be smart with the budget so that you have room to get a case of Prosecco once in a while. When faced with a situation that seems helpless, where Betsy once thought, “What would Mrs. Fleming do?”, we will think, "What would Betsy do?’'Betsy, your commitment to this School and to us will resonate with all of us for decades to come. We will miss your daily presence beyond measure, but we will never forget your legacy. You are a true icon, and a pillar of this institution. Thank you for all you have done for us, and for me. |
